Missions and Outreach

Volunteers in a variety of outreach efforts have found exciting opportunities to serve Jesus by using their time and talents, fulfilling Christ's mission in the world. Below are some of the many mission activities undertaken by our congregation.

St Mary’s Interfaith Services

On the first Friday of each month, Central UMC volunteers in the kitchen at the Fr. Alan McCoy Dining Room on the grounds of St. Mary’s Interfaith Community Services in downtown Stockton (545 W. Sonora Street) serving lunch and offering other services as needed.  Our volunteer team arrives at 11:00a.m. to receive instructions and to serve lunch from 11:30-12:30 a.m.

Project Cleveland

Cleveland Elementary School is our neighborhood school.  In January 2009, we began a partnership with the school by hosting a family dinner for the families of Cleveland Elementary School.  Several ministries have developed from that initial dinner.

Family Dinner

Once a month, usually on the fourth Friday of the month, Central Church volunteers prepare dinner in our kitchen.  This dinner is served in our Fellowship Hall at 6 p.m. to families from Cleveland Elementary School.   We also offer board games and crafts for families to enjoy as part the evening.

Classroom Volunteers

Central Church provides classroom volunteers for the three Cleveland Elementary School kindergarten classrooms during the school year.  Volunteers assist in the classroom in many different ways – from preparing materials for the next school day to helping students complete projects.

Rotary Read In

Central Church participated in the Rotary Read In by reading at Cleveland School.  Volunteers read in grades one through four.  We hope to expand our reading to the fifth grade in 2011.

Volunteers are needed for each of the three projects.  If you are interested in serving please call Alan Cook at (209) 466-5046

Sierra Service Project

Our United Methodist Church Youth Fellowship participate in this summer service program.  Through these acts of service, repairing homes in Native American and urban communities, participant’s lives have changed. SSP is open to high school students. This year the group will be going to Bear River Rancheria near the town of Loleta on Calfironia's north coast.  The Rancheria is starting a green building project and the members of our team will be working in constructing a new home.  They will be assembling "structurally integrated panels."

Other opportunities to serve...

There are many other service opportunities in the world, in our community and in our church.  Check out our Opportunities to Serve table each Sunday or see the listing of service opportunities in each issue of the Central Story.
