Last night I met faithful women volunteers and their husbands at a member’s home. We shared how we have served our community and church. Each person had rich stories. I found out that these women belong to the 4th circle of the former UMW, now United Women in Faith. I remembered my orientation lesson for the newly ordained pastors. The lecturer asked us, “When you are appointed to a local church, you have to get along well with the most powerful group in any local church. Do you know what is the group?” Many newly ordained pastors answered. “Trustee.” “Finance.” “SPRC.” The instructor was not happy. Then somebody said, “UMW.” He shouted, “YES!” Then he asked again. “Do you know why they are so powerful?” Then the same wise person answered again. “They do all the volunteer work for the church and community sacrificially.”
In a church, those who serve have power. Theose who sacrifice their time, talents, and treasure can have influence on others. They earn their power through service and sacrifice. I respect these women and their family who support their mission and ministries.
