CALL TO WORSHIP
John Bradbury, MA ‘75
L: In this year of our Lord
On this Sabbath morning
In this historic Sanctuary made sacred
By Bread, Cup and Basin
The Holy One meets us here and calls us…
P: To pull down structures that prevent access to quality education, food
and shelter.
L: In this historic Sanctuary made sacred
By holy imagination
A longing for truth
And a search for wisdom
The Holy One meets us here and calls us…
P: To overthrow political and religious systems that divide the world
and promote extremism.
L: In this historic Sanctuary made sacred
By prayers of gratitude
Pleas for pardon
And petitions for healing
The Holy One meets us and calls us…
P: To build communities of peace with justice
and plant seeds of compassion and hope.
HYMN
“Praise the Source of Faith and Learning” (Tune: Hymn to Joy)
[Words: Thomas H. Troeger Music: Rowland H. Prichard]
UOP Alumni & Hymn Leaders
Praise the source of faith and learning who has sparked and stoked the mind
With a passion for discerning how the world has been designed
Let the sense of wonder flowing from the wonders we survey
Keep our faith forever growing and renew our need to pray
God of wisdom, we acknowledge that our science and our art
And the breadth of human knowledge only partial truth impart
Far beyond our calculation lies a depth we cannot sound
Where your purpose for creation and the pulse of life are found
Praise for minds to probe the heavens, praise for strength to breathe the air,
Praise for all that beauty leavens, praise for silence, music, prayer,
Praise for justice and compassion and for strangers, neighbors, friends,
Praise for hearts and lips to fashion, praise for love that never ends.

LORD’S PRAYER
Our God in heaven, your name is holy. Your kindom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who have trespassed against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for yours is the kindom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
MUSICAL RESPONSE
“The Gift of Love” Vs. 1 & 2 UMH #408
[Words and Music: Hal Hopson]
Susan Perez, Soprano UOP student, 2022
Verse 1
Though I may speak with bravest fire,
and have the gift to all inspire,
and have not love,
my words are vain, as sounding brass, and hopeless gain.
Verse 2
Though I may give all I possess,
and striving so my love profess,
but not be given by love within,
the profit soon turns strangely thin.
SCRIPTURE READING
Mark 12:28-34 ~ Carina Low BS ‘18, MS ‘19
One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Then the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that he is one, and besides him there is no other’; and ‘to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength,’ and ’to love one’s neighbor as oneself,’ – this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that no one dared to ask him any question.

Come, Spirit, come, our hearts control,
our spirits long to be made whole.
