Fifth Sunday of Easter
PRELUDE
“For the Beauty of the Earth”
[Setting by John Rutter]
Rebecca Nelson, Piano
WELCOME AND CENTERING TIME
Jan Everhart Hartliff, Pastor
SCRIPTURE READING
John Bradbury, Lay Leader
John 15:1-4 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. God removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit God prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Remain in me as I remain in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.”
CALL TO WORSHIP (unison)
Divine Vinegrower, the soil of your love nurtures the roots of our lives. As we consecrate ourselves to your loving care, plant us in the soil of your love, that we may remain in Christ, our true vine. Allow us to bear the fruit of love and grace! Give us rain in seasons of doubt and nourish our growth, that our harvest of love may bless the world. We pray in your bountiful name, Amen.
HYMN
“O Spirit of the Living God” verses 1 & 2
United Methodist Hymnal #539
[Henry Tweedy; arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams]
O Spirit of the Living God, thou light and fire divine,
descend upon thy church once more, and make it truly thine.
Fill it with love and joy and power, with righteousness and peace;
til Christ shall dwell in human hearts, and sin and sorrow cease.
Blow, wind of God! With wisdom blow until our minds are free
from mists of error, clouds of doubt, which blind our eyes to thee.
Burn, winged fire! Inspire our lips with flaming love and zeal,
to preach to all this great good news, God’s glorious commonweal.
CHILDREN’S TIME

Lord prepare me to be a sanctuary,
pure and holy, tried and true,
with thanksgiving, I’ll be a living sanctuary for you.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE…THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our God in heaven, your name is holy. Your kindom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our wrongs, as we forgive those who have harmed us. Lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil. For yours is the kindom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
PRAYER RESPONSE
“In the Lord I’ll be Ever Thankful”
The Faith We Sing #2195

In the Lord I’ll be ever thankful, in the Lord I will rejoice!
Look to God, do not be afraid.
Lift up your voices, the Lord is near,
lift up your voices, the Lord is near.
SCRIPTURE READING
John Bradbury, Lay Leader
John 20:24-30 But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”
A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.”
