FACTS ABOUT THE ABOVE PHOTO
I named her Tina
For the next few weeks I will be sharing photos from my 2023 trip to Yellowstone. My dad lived in Bozeman, MT from 1999 to 2011. I would visit about every 2 years and we always made a trip to Yellowstone. Sometimes more than one trip! I love Yellowstone. To this day I am still just a little mad at my dad for moving back to California (he knows it), although he is much closer now.
This trip I went with Aaron and his dad. Both had never been to Yellowstone – I played tour guide. It was a wonderful trip. We stayed at Henry’s Lake.
Tina was our neighbor for the week. She lived across the street with her 5 or 6 kids. At first she was a little leery of us, but as the week went on she became more comfortable with using being around. I would go out every morning and evening with my camera to see if her and her kits were out of their den so I could take pictures. I think she started posing for me after a few days. If you look closely you will see two of her kits playing in the brush right next to her.
Tina is a red fox. The red fox has been documented in Yellowstone since the 1880s. Red foxes occur in several color phases, but they are usually distinguished from coyotes by their reddish yellow coat that is somewhat darker on the back and shoulders, with black “socks” on their lower legs. In late April and May, when females are nursing kits at their dens, they are sometimes more visible during daylight hours, foraging busily to get enough food for their growing offspring.
Expect to see more pictures of Tina and her kits in the next few weeks.
